The Blocks Part Two

The Blocks Part Two is a short animated film produced as part of an ongoing community arts project in Rialto, Dublin. Filmmakers Gary Gowran and Sadhbh Lawlor have been working with the Rialto Community Drug Team, facilitator Joanie Whyte and the Step by Step family support group since 2018.

In that time they produced the first Blocks film looking at the childhoods of women and girls from their community through the eyes of our created character Sissy. This second film in the series looks at Sissy and her friend Mary as they leave adolescence and begin to make their first steps in the adult world. We explore both their personal social experience and the social context they inhabit. These include their experiences of work, romance, education, gender roles and sex.

The film is part of a continuing narrative exploration of the challenges around addiction, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), hidden harm and the impact of generational trauma.

This project is supported by the Canal Communities Local Drug and Alcohol Task Force, the HSE and the City of Dublin Education and Training Board.

In March 2025 the Blocks Project was nominated for and won an Aontas Star Award for excellence in Adult Education in the Health and Well-being category.
